NIA CHARLESTOWN Nevis, January 24th, 2013 -- New Premier of Nevis Hon. Vance Amory says there are a number of priority areas that his Administration planned to deal with but paramount would be to look at ways to jump-start the island’s economy and the creation of a more harmonious society.
 
Mr. Amory’s comment came on January 23, 2013, in an interview with the media moments after he had received his Instruments of Office and had taken his Oaths of Secrecy and Allegiance at the High Court in Charlestown.
 
“There are a number of things not in any specific order but clearly we have to get the economy up and running again, so that people can have jobs and that the business sector can find some comfort in doing business, expanding their business, ensuring that they are profitable. That’s going to be a challenge but I think it can be done. We have to look at other sectors of the economy where we promote Nevis and ensure that we get investment to create employment…
 
“On the softer side but more very important side, is to get our Nevis community or Nevis society united after the very serious and divisive years that we have had. I think those years have been really very difficult and it has taken its toll on the people of Nevis but I do believe that because of our fundamental nature as a very peaceful people that we can mend the fences we can build the bridges and we can establish a harmonious society again which I think is important if we are to make any progress,” he said.
 
The new Premier added that the island’s youth would also be instrumental in his Administration’s efforts to make a more harmonious society.
 
“I remember when we were doing the town hall meetings, I spent I think a whole session dealing with creating a more harmonious society looking at people, looking at youth development, how can we get our youth to be more gentle but strong in their understanding of community and get this to spill over into the adult society and also in the political environment, so that we do not have the divisiveness and we have a cohesive harmonious society to make things better for all the people,” he said.
