BASSETERRE St. Kitts, January 25th, 2013 -- The public protest is continuing here on Friday 25th January, 2013, to force the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, to allow the debate on a Motion of No Confidence that was filed in November last year by the opposition parties, PAM and CCM.
The Leader of the People’s Action Movement, Mr. Shawn Richards, has already indicated that his party intends to continue its public pressure until the Resolution is given the priority attention it deserves, to be heard in the parliament.
Richards is of the view that the government has been hiding behind all sorts of administrative procedures and using all types of tactics to delay the hearing, but the no matter what is attempted, there must come a time for the motion of No Confidence to be determined.
However, Prime Minister Douglas has a different view on the matter. For him, there are other matters that must take priority.
Referring to previous public comments last December pertaining to the proposed Motion of No Confidence, Dr. Douglas reiterated: “The Vote of No Confidence is in a Parliamentary Democracy. It has to be heard, but it cannot be heard and everything else drop beside it. It does not work like that. The budget session was already announced before the (proposed) Vote of No Confidence motion was placed and I am certain that it will find its rightful place on the legislative agenda at the right time.”
“There should be no fear that someone is going to try not to have this matter brought to Parliament. The matter has to be brought to the Parliament; there are procedures and processes to be followed, for it to be brought to the Parliament.
When one carefully reads the comments of the Prime Minister however, one could interpret that he is suggesting that the matter of the Motion of No confidence has not yet been brought to the parliament. “Those who wish it to be heard in Parliament must bring it to the Parliament and then it will be heard,” stated the Prime Minister on Tuesday 22nd January, during his weekly radio program on ZIZ.
The people’s Action Movement has announced that the march of No Confidence on Friday this week, will again demonstrate to the Prime Minister that he no longer commands the support and confidence of the members of parliament and more importantly the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
PAM continues to hold the position that because of the poor state of the economy and the high cost of living, mixed with the high cost in electricity, proposed increases in the cable television rates, and the huge National Debt, the Prime Minister is no longer favoured by the majority of citizens.
Friday’s march is due to start at 4:00pm from Greenlands, and will travel through the city of Basseterre, ending on Bank Street with a rally. Senior members of the party are expected to address the gathering, including Mr. Richards, Deputy Leader Eugene Hamilton, former Leader Lindsay Grant, Party Chairman Selwyn Liburd and his Deputy Jonel Powell.
It is being dubbed a March of No Confidence in the prime Minister.
